Eminent Take 2 – The End

Well here goes nothing.

I am in pure shock when I think that I don’t have to do eminent next year.  It is strange to think next year i’ll be watching eminent.  Anyways getting back to this year and everything I did, I honestly don’t know what or how to feel now that eminent is over.  I had so much fun during this project but I also am looking forward to some relaxation.

To start of my last post of eminent for the second year in a row, I will talk about my learning center.  I wish I had though of an idea ahead of when I did because I could’ve been way more extravaggant with my learning center.  As I mentioned last year, I love creating learning centers because I can express my creativity and go over the top with them.  This year instead of going over the top I focused on very small details.  I was being really meticulous with my learning center.  I picked a time period that it would be in and I tried to get everything I needed for it.  For example: I only showed people the work Lise Meitner published up to that date, I got a present that she gave to her friend after the date I set my seen in, and I also had suitcases to show this was around the time she left Germany.  Instead of blowing people away with my creativity, I decided to gain their attention with my precision.  Above all I really liked my learning center.

Another main component to Night of the Notables is the grade 10 speeches.  After last year I remember myself wondering how I was going to do this in a year and here I am already done it.  I wasn’t that nervous before I got up on the stage.  I maybe had a split second of doubt before I started talking.  Once I began my speech I was amazed how easily I fell into a trance like state.  I rehearsed my speech so much it was second nature to me.  Once I finished my speech though, my nerves decided to hat me and all come flying towards me as I left the stage.  I don’t know why but all the worry I had about my speech just hit me after I finished my speech.  I glad it hit me after instead of before.

Now to end off another year of eminent, I can say that I am very proud of myself and what I have accomplished.  I am so glad that I got the chance to do eminent and I cannot wait until next year to be in the audience instead of on the stage.  I will cherish every memory I made during this process.  I looked over the memories fondly and I will never forget the amazing time I had during both years of Eminent.

So I guess this is it.  I will never have to do eminent again.  Here goes nothing. This concludes Eminent take 2, the end.

Eminent Take 2 – Annotated Bibliography

Byers, Nina, and Gary Williams. Out of the Shadows: Contributions of Twentieth-Century Women to Physics. Cambridge University Press, 2010.

This book is where I first discovered Lise Meitner and her life story.  This book was super helpful because it first had a short summary to quickly read through before you had to decide if you wanted to keep reading.  It also had a bunch of other interesting female scientist to learn about.

http://www.atomicarchive.com/Bios/Meitner.shtml

This website was really helpful to catch my interest because it had a nice summary to capture my interest.  It was great starter because from this website I knew that I wanted to choose Lise Meitner as my eminent person.

McGrayne, Sharon Bertsch. Nobel Prize Women in Science: Their Lives, Struggles, and Momentous Discoveries. Joseph Henry Press, 2006.

Yes it is another book.  I found this book tremendously helpful because it went more deeper into her life story.  It explained with quite a lot of detail about her work: what she did and why she wasn’t recognized for it.

This is a link to the online version of a book.  I couldn’t find the book in the library so I read of the online version.  This book was my main source of information because it contained everything Lise Meitner went through, all the way from her childhood to the last bit of her years.  This book was so helpful in so many ways.  It was also a very interesting read.

Eminent take 2 – Document of Learning

In this document of learning I am going to talk about my story of Eminent.  So basically everything that happened but a summarized version.

So I have been thinking about who my eminent person was going to be right after I did eminent last year.  To summarize the next 10 months after my grade 9 eminent year, I had no clue.  Then the time for eminent came around again so my brain told myself, “come on Megan this is your last year do someone you are really interested in”.  My answer to my predicament, Google.  I literally googled influential women in mathematics.  That’s what lead me done the road to discovering my eminent person.  Now I chose a eminent person later then everyone else and the only thing I regret about that is that it gave me less of a chance to get an interview.  Other then that I was glad I chose later because if I didn’t I might have never done Lise Meitner.   Anyways my researching began and to start me of; I visited the Vancouver Public Library, again.  This time though I had a plan I wrote down every book I should get to research my eminent person.  I didn’t find any of them.  I did find some replacements though.  My biggest accomplishment of all is that I found an online version of the number one book I wanted to find.  I quickly started reading that right away.  I dedicated myself to finishing reading that book before I worked on my speech or my learning center.  That meant that I had to read fast.  I finished the book and now it was time to start working on my learning center and my speech.  Luckily for me I was keeping a list of things that I need to put in my learning center.  I also was keeping track of the many ideas I had for a speech.  I quickly narrowed it down to one thought and set off written until I was satisfied with my work.  Quicker then I expected it was the day of eminent.  I don’t know why but I wasn’t that nervous.  I think all my nerves hit be right after I finished my speech.  They fizzled out before I went to my learning center so that I was actual calm when people were talking to me.  I realized that I wasn’t even thinking about the answers to my questions I just knew them.  That definitely made my nerves disappear.  So that was my very brief story about eminent and everything I went through to get through eminent.  That concludes my document of Learning.

Eminent Take 2 – Speeches

To start this off, I am just going to say this a rough skeleton draft of my speech.  If you have read my previous blog post, you know that I am not that great at deciding things and I am always second guessing myself.  Well it’ not any different when I am thinking of how to write an eminent speech.  Anyways here is the main idea I have fore my eminent speech.

Intro/hook:  Talking to herself.  Struggling with a problem.  It might sound weird because she is/I am talking to myself

Start of rising action:  Questions why she is still doing this.

Rising Action:  Trying to answer the question, start listing the negative things that have happened to get to this point.  All the struggles she has faced.  The unfairness of it all.  Talk about going to school to be a French teacher before she was allowed in universities.

Climax:  Realising that she does love it.  It’s her passion.  Thin about all the good moment and experiences she has had.  All the things she has discovered.  All the joys

Conclusion: This is why I am still doing this.  Goes back to work on the problem.  This time with a smile.

This might not seem like much but to me it’s perfect.  I also have a couple of other speech ideas in my head so hopefully I can wright a couple of different speeches and see what I like best.  Out of all the different ideas I have gong on in my head, I definitely like this one the best so far.  I think it is because the way I formatted I; it allows be to show all the hardships she has been through and it also lets me show everyone why she this is her passion.  If I really get stuck and the speech does not turn out as great as I think it will, I can always change it.  For now I am going to stick with this outline though.

EMINENT take 2 – Intro post

It is that time of the year again, Eminent.  Which means Night of the Notables are right around the corner and interview emails are being sent out constantly.  Before all of this happens there is one thing each and every TALON student has to do.  Pick an Eminent person (insert dramatic music here).

When thinking of possible eminent people there is always an internal debate going on in my head.  It is hard for me to choose just one person. I am very scared that I will get halfway through researching my eminent person and then find someone who fits my description of an eminent person better.  Although despite everything this is what kind of happened to me.  Before going to the library trip I had though of a person: Mary Cartwright.  So of course when we got to the library that is who I researched.  During that research I found a book.  This book contained many female physicist that had done many incredible things.  This is where I found my eminent person: Lise Meitner.

When I started reading about Lise Meitner, I realised that this was my eminent person right away.  I quickly found out how amazing she is and all the things she has contributed to the world.  These things may have a contributing factor for why she is my eminent person but none of them is the main reason why I chose her.  The main reason I chose Lise Meitner as my eminent person is because she deserves to be talked about.  Everyone should know her story and I want to tell it to them.  I want to be able to portray just how incredible and brilliant she is.  I want to share every struggle she went through and to show the world just how strong she is.  This is why I chose her as my eminent person.  When I am reading about her the thought of someone that might be better as an eminent person never crosses my mind.

There isn’t that many similarities between us.  Although she was a physicist and I want to study mathematics.  She was born into a big family,  and I was born into a family that might be considered big but compared to hers in is pretty small.  When she was a child school stopped at the age of 14 for girls, so she then prepared herself to become a French teacher.  As I looked toward a future profession I would like to have teaching has crossed my mind.  I also think it would be fun to learn French as I am already in French 10 and hopefully I will continue to study it to French 12.  If you look close enough you can find similarities but you can also find differences.  She lived in a different century a different country and on a different continent.  That is what will probably be the hardest part of my eminent person study.  I have to remember that there was a lot more struggles for females in science in the early 1900’s.  I also will never know what is like to live through WW1 and WW2.  I have to take in all of these facts when I am creating a speech, making a learning center, and whenever I am researching about her.

Even with all the differences between Lise Meitner and myself I still want to have her as my eminent person with all my heart.  I hope that I can tell everybody about everything she has done and all the wonderful things she has accomplished in her life.  I am really glad that I chose her because I feel a lot more passionate about her being my eminent person then my last year eminent person. Charles Darwin.  I think it’s because I can discover a lot more things about that I don’t know yet.  Last year I has already done a project on Charles Darwin Before, but now I get to start from scratch and I couldn’t be happier about it.

I am really ready for excited for this eminent project so here goes, Eminent take 2

Finished!!!!!!

Well this is the last one.  My last Eminent post, for 2016.  I got a whole year to think about what I am going to do next year.  Yeah!!!!!

To start off i am going to tell you about my favourite part of Eminent, the learning centre.  It’s my favourite because I got to make up the whole thing.  I got to decide what I was doing and I got to show my knowledge on Charles Darwin.  I loved telling everyone about him.  I was a little bit nervous at the start, I didn’t know what to tell people and I didn’t know what people were going to ask me.  Once someone talked to me it all melted away.  I actually felt like i was talking to much.  I Just kept going because I wanted them to see how much I loved researching about him.

Ok know to talk about what was actually in my learning centre.  To start of I had a small img_4005big desk.  Its like those big desk in the science room except it one of the smaller ones.  Sorry if this if confusing to anyone.  On the small big desk I had a Model of the galapagos.
I made it out of newspaper, glue, water and flour.  I am particularly proud of this one not only did it take me about four hours to complete it actually turned out descent.  I am also proud of myself because I was only suppose to do it if I had enough time, translation if I didn’t procrastinate with the other things I had to do and i didn’t so I am really happy about that.  You might ask why Galapagos well that where all these theories began for him.  There is even a mountain/hill named after him there.

On top of the galapagos islands where a bunch of TORTOISES!  9 to be exact.

img_4006Why tortoises well when he visited the galapagos he got to explore the Island so he started studying the animals there one of which was tortoises.  They were so big he actually got to ride one.  On the tortoises were all designs to make them look like tortoises and on the other side of them I had interesting facts I had learned about Charles from the book Charles Darwin his life and times.  The interesting facts were the pink stickies, but i will talk about that later.  I also had numbers on them just incase someone couldn’t read my writing and i couldn’t read it either (it has happened before).  I had a list of all the investing facts on a sheet nearby.  Always prepared right.  I also had some tortoises hanging from the ceiling.  The also included facts and had numbers on them but I had them on the ceiling instead.  Yuwen suggested to me that I arranged them in a way so that there is a string of four in the middle then a string of three on both sides of the four string then two then one, and that’s what I did I just arranged them in a right angle, so thank you Yuwen.

The next thing I had for my display was the sign Charles Darwin.  I cut out this cardboardy type of material into the shape of the boat he went on for the five year on trip the H.M.S. Beagle.

http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/exhibitions/Darwin/bigpics/Keynes_beagle_model.jpg

Then I try to paint it the colour of the boat he actually went on and I think I got pretty close.  I also painted his name on the boat with black paint but I kind of messed up instead of writing Charles Darwin, I wrote Charles Darles.  So at the end of Darwin there is a darker patch on the boat and that was because I try to paint over the les, but it didn’t turn out that great.

Last but not let i had the Map of the world taped up above the small big table.

img_4004On the map there was a bunch of city names on the cardboardy type material taped up on the map.  Well each city was a place he visited on his five year journey it also has when he visited and when he left.  If you flipped the cardboardy material over you could see a number and that was the number of the placed he visited.  For example if you flipped Cape Verde islands over you could see a number one because that was the fist place he visited.

To top it all of I had the book Charles Darwin his life and times right in front and centre.

http://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1348650203i/6859483._UY200_.jpg

It also covered the sheet that had all of the facts on it.

The next big part of Eminent is the speech which I was really stressed for.  One thing was writing it. Which was hard This has never happened to me before but I kept getting way over the time limit.  Although it was really easy to research what i am going to say because of the book and all my stickies.  I knew they would be good for something.  It was really easy to research because of the system of the stickies.  Red was question, orange was important people, yellow was eminence, green was scientific facts, blue important dates, purple is religion and places and pink is interesting facts.    The other thing was presenting it.  That’s the hard part. I have never been the best at public speaking I never feel comfortable doing it.  I try to compensate by making it funny and weird, but it’s just so hard for me to stand up there.  Before i had to go was so hard just sitting there waiting, watching and more waiting.  It especially hard because everyone is so amazing so I just had to sit there watching them and stressing myself more and more.  Especially when I walked up to present I was so shaky.  Once I started I was still shaking and after I presented I was still shaky.  It took me a while for me to calm down.

Over all I did enjoy eminent.  At first I was worried I picked the wrong eminent person but after the first day of research all the worries melted away.  Everyone that knows me knows once i start reading a book I cannot put it down.  It was perfect to because I started researching Charles when I finished the first Harry Potter book.  So I had to finish the book before I read Harry Potter.  So I really did enjoy Eminent and I am really excited for next year.

Interview Completed…. not really.

I am kind of confused with what I am supposed to write for my interview post so bear with me.

Once I picked Charles Darwin I knew that someone has done him in the past four years.  So Mr. Jackson emailed him for me.  After that me and Tori had a perfect plan because she was going to interview our Grade five teacher Mr.Tjosvold so I emailed our Grade eight teacher Mrs.Hughes to see if I could interview her on the same day so we could visit our Middle school together.  Sadly she couldn’t then.  I then emailed her if she had any other free times that I could Interview her.  She still didn’t answer.  I emailed her one more time to to ask if I could email her the questions i had for her.  No answer.  It looked like i had no hope for an interview but then Mr.Jackson said the previous guy to do Charles Darwin responded to his email and that he would email me about the interview.  But I did’t receive any email.  My theory is that my Computer hates me and if the email has anything to due with a Interview it does not let any of them through.  But that’s just my theory.

So thats my interview process so TaDah!!!!

Bibliography

Brief summary of his life.  Lots of facts in it.  Good starting point.  Gives some light on his life and what he did and his childhood.

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1960180.A_Brief_Guide_to_Charles_Darwin_His_Life_and_Times

Very enjoyable to read.  Very interesting and full of facts.  Covers all areas of his life and what he is feeling when something happens.  Discusses everything that he did.  Very good to research his life and times.  Very helpful if you put sticky notes then you can go into anyplace in the book.  It gives you interesting look into his life and describes every detail.  So much you can learn from this book.  It gives you some visuals of what he looks like all through his life.  It also gives you a visual into what the H.M.S beagle looks like.  It has a summary of his most important dates at the back of the book.  It has a brief overview of his father.  It also has a brief overview of the currency and how much then would be how much now.   It also includes some maps of where he traveled.

This website is all about Charles Darwin.  It has a lot of facts about Charles and it is conveniently organized into different sections depending on what you want to research.

Eminent Document of Learning

Ok I know I should have posted this a long time ago but I am posting it now.  This is just going to be a summary of what I have learned in the past 2-3 weeks.

As you may know, I have decided to do my eminent person project on Charles Darwin.  At first I was very nervous about picking him because we do not have a lot in common.  I am so glad i ignored that because I just love reading about him and what he did.  He was a truly amazing scientist and I so wish I could do the speech from my perspective, because I have so many things to say about him.  I am so happy i chose him as my eminent person.

To research Charles I have been reading a short biography.  Well to me it was long.  It was 301 pages of his actually life with some other stuff written in the book that wasn’t included in the 301 pages, like his family.  This book has been so helpful. Not only have a learned about him, I have read about the most important time in his life and the most important people in his life  and how he saw them and how he reacted to them.  Reading this book really gave me some knowledge on what he had to go through and it wasn’t all rainbows and unicorns.  Did you know it took him 20 years to wright and complete the Origin of species because he was struggling with sickness all the time and it was’t just the common cold it was throwing up constantly going to doctor monthly getting special treatments done.  Also he only published his theory because one guy (Alfred Russell Wallace).

I kind of went a little crazy when reading that book.  I had a bunch of stickies so each category was a different colour red-questions, orange-important people, yellow-eminence and chapter dividers, green-scientific, blue-important dates, purple-country/religion/places and last but not leas pink-interesting facts.  The people that saw the book at one point or another knows how much stickies are in that book especially at the start.  Hopefully it will help me out and I definitely think it will, if it doesn’t I will be really sad.  Seriously there are a lot of sticky notes!

This is pretty much all I have done for research except using 3 other nooks and 1 website. I haven’t read that much of the books or the website but I read a whole autobiography.

I may have (definitely have) mentioned this to some people or some people have heard me while talking to others.  The perspective I am using of my speech is Charles Darwin’s Hair. I know it sounds strange but he has done a lot of strange things, thats why I am interesting in him.

And know to totally switch topics.

I have stared coming up with ideas for my learning centre and in my mind it looks really good it just transferring the image from my mind into real life thats the problem, but I think it will be ok.  I am planning on drawing a boat (SS Beagle) on cardboard and then cutting it out and putting the interesting facts all around the ship.  Then having the map of the places he went on that boat trip above it and every stop write something he did there.  I will have lights hanging around and lanterns.  In my mind it looks really cool I just have to pull it of.

So that has been my journey so far.  I think I have done a good job but I am still really nervous for presentation, but I am that kind of nervous where its 50% nervous and 50% excited.

INTRO POST

Eminent.

For my eminent project I have chosen Charles Darwin.  I have chosen him because he was so different yet he is one of the most influential scientist of all time.  Last year my friends and I did a project on him.  It was a very interesting experience.  We didn’t really know a lot about him, but when we started researching him we found so many unusual things that he did.  For instance did you know he ate a rat and a armadillo while he was traveling.  He also rode a turtle.  Unusual.

If you cannot think of who Charles Darwin is or you have heard the name before but you cannot think of what he did in his lifetime well, he is thought as the greatest biologist in history.  His most famous work, On the Origin of Species, explains the theory of evolution by natural selection providing numerous supporting examples.  He believed that all life on earth had descended from one common ancestor, whose offspring could vary slightly from the original.  This is interesting to me because I am interested in biology which maybe I could learn more about after reading about him and his work.

It is going to be difficult for me because I do not have a lot of things in common with Charles Darwin, but I think it will be fun.  I am also nervous because I am not that great of a public speaker. Public speaking is one of my goals I have on my IEP, which means I get to work on it during this project and I hope I can better my skills on it.

I hope during this project I will improve on my researching skills especially while keeping track of my sources because I always forget to do that or I do it the wrong way.  I would also like to improve on my speech writing skills and of course my public speaking skills which I definitely think will help me in the future.  The last thing I would like to improve on is my penmanship because I going to be writing all my notes and if I cant read what I wrote (which has happened before) that will be a problem.

By the end of the next month I hope I will have a greater evolution of knowledge on Charles Darwin.
